The contract for M.P. Moller opus 4505 was signed in October of 1925 for $40,000. The organ was completed and installed the following spring. It was dedicated by Hugh McAmis who remained on as municipal organists. Mr. McAmis played organ programs three times weekly on the instrument; the audiences averaging around 1,500 although the record was 5,000 for one recital. When city administrations changed, the recitals were discontinued and Walter Dunham replaced Hugh McAmis who had left San Antonio for New York City. By 1933 the organ was no longer used for regular recital programs. The organ was completely destroyed in a huge fire that gutted the entire interior of the auditorium on January 6,1979. The auditorium was rebuilt and restored to its original look (without the organ) and it exists today. The huge organ grills are the only indication that an organ was once installed there.
